UniCare Sound Summer Health Tips

Staying healthy during the summer months requires more than just eating the right foods. Having the right health plan is a big contributor too! UniCare Sound is the perfect health plan for young active adults in Texas, and Illinois.

Below is a partial list of things to do that will help you stay cool and healthy during the hot summer months.

1. Drink plenty of water. It is very important to drink water. Your body needs water to prevent dehydration during warm summer days. Take special care to make sure infants and toddlers drink enough water. They can become dehydrated much more easily than adults.

2.If you have asthma or other respiratory problems, keep a careful watch on the daily air quality reports. Also, don't forget to take your inhaler or other medication with you when you go out.

3.Take a rest or nap. Don't push yourself beyond your physical limits.

4. Wear Sunscreen. Sunburn is painful and unhealthy. Use a sunscreen that is right for your skin.

5. Stay Cool. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing to help you stay cooler.

6. Wear Sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyesfrom the sun's UV rays.

7. Maintain your energy level by limiting your intake of fat and sugar; focus on carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables.

8. Before leaving for vacation pack a few items (calamine lotion, baking soda) that will help with itchy or painful insect bites.

10. If you have Allergies and plan to be traveling/vacationing, find out which plants will be pollinating in your vacation spot

Know your body. If you are feeling ill, see a doctor. An average of 400 people die each year in the United States due to extreme heat. UniCare Sound features a great emergency room benefit which allows you instant access at any emergency room. You also have unlimited copays for doctor visits which can come in handy when you are not feeling right.

The most important health tip we can give you for Summer is to keep the UniCare Sound Plan card in your wallet for the moments when life throws you a curve!

UniCare Sound and eating to stay healthy

One of the smartest thing's you can do to protect your health is sign up for the UniCare Sound Health Plan. The Sound plans covers your body, eye's, and teeth, you know the important things! The folk's at Sound also want to get the message out that prevention is key to good health. It all starts with eating healthier, getting exercise, and seeing your doctor for checkups.

A really good idea is to attempt to eat healthier. American's are not eating enough vegetable and fruits. evidence is mounting that the healthiest diets are loaded with plant foods (vegetables, fruits and beans) and short on animal foods (meat, fish, poultry and dairy products), especially those with a high fat content.

"A diet rich in fruits and vegetables plays a role in reducing the risk of all the major causes of illness and death," says Walter Willet, Head of the Nutrition Department at the Harvard School of Public Health.

To many people, vegetarian is a loaded word. It typically refers to people who never eat meat, fish or poultry for ethical, religious or health reasons. Vegans also avoid all dairy products and eggs. But scientists are more interested in how often - not whether - people eat animal foods. And much of their research points to the same conclusion: people should eat fewer animal foods and more plant foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Why? Here are 10 reasons - some related to health, some not.

1. Cancer

"The scientific base is very strong suggesting that fruits and vegetables are protective elements for all gastrointestinal cancers and all smoking-related cancers," says Tim Byers, professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. That includes cancers of the lung, colon, stomach, mouth, larynx, esophagus and bladder. And a recent study found that lycopene - a carotenoid in tomatoes and tomato sauce - may protect against prostate cancer. It's not clear how fruits and vegetables may reduce cancer risk. It could be their phytochemicals - things like carotenoids, vitamins C and E, selenium, indoles, flavonoids, phenols and limonene. There is also evidence that high-fibre grains like wheat bran can reduce cancer risk. "Fibre has a beneficial effect in preventing colon cancer," says David Jenkins, a fibre expert at the University of Toronto. And pasta, rice and other grains can replace the animal foods - red meat, in particular - that may increase the risks of some cancers. "Men who eat red meat as a main dish five or more times a week have four times the risk of colon cancer of men who eat red meats less than once a month," says Edward Giovannucci of Harvard Medical School. Heavy red-meat eaters were also twice as likely to get prostate cancer in his study of 50,000 male health professionals. That's just one study. Looking at others, says Lawrence Kushi of the University of Minnesota, "the evidence is quite consistent that red meat is associated with a higher risk of colon - possibly prostate - cancer". But even lean red meat seems to increase the risk of colon cancer. "It could be the carcinogens created when meat is cooked or meat's highly available iron, or something else in meat," speculates Willett.

2.Heart disease

A plant-based diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart disease. For the last 20 years, heart experts have emphasised cutting saturated fat and cholesterol intake, but plants may protect the heart in other ways. Among them: * Soluble Fibre: "To reduce your risk of heart disease, you may want to eat more beans, peas, oats, and barley," says Jenkins, because their "sticky" soluble fibre seems to help lower blood cholesterol. * Folic Acid: "The evidence that folic acid reduces the risk of heart disease is pretty strong," says Willet. Folic acid, a B-vitamin, lowers blood levels of a harmful amino acid called homocysteine. "And fruits and vegetables are a major source of folic acid," he adds.* Antioxidants: a growing body of evidence suggests that LDL ("bad") cholesterol damages arteries only when it has been oxidised (combined with oxygen). That's why researchers believe that antioxidants like vitamin E may protect the heart. And many of the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables are antioxidants. * Squeezing Out Saturates: if you eat lots of plant foods, there's simply less room for the saturated animal fats that clog arteries.

3. Stroke

There's a lot of evidence showing that fruits and vegetables are beneficial for reducing the risk of stroke," says Willet. For example, in a 20-year study of 832 middle-aged men, the risk of stroke was 22 per cent lower for every three servings of fruits and vegetables the men ate each day. Again, no one's sure if it's the potassium, magnesium, fibre or other components of fruits and vegetables that prevent arteries from clogging in the brain.

4. Diverticulosis & Constipation

High-fibre grains - especially wheat bran - can help prevent constipation. That's not trivial in a country like the US that spends millions a year on laxatives. Diverticulosis is also common. About 30 to 40 per cent of people over 50 have it, though most have no symptoms. Others experience bleeding, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, pain, or diverticulitis (that's when the pouches - or diverticula - that form in the walls of the colon get inflamed). "In our studies, it's clear that fibre both from bran and from fruits and vegetables is protective," says Willet. Men who ate the least fibre (13 grams or less a day) were almost twice as likely to get diverticulosis as men who ate the most fibre (at least 32 grams of fibre a day).

5. Other diseases

Plant-rich diets may prevent other illnesses:* Macular Degeneration: a carotenoid called lutein - which is found mostly in leafy greens - may help prevent the deterioration of the retina that causes blindness in older people. "In our study, people who ate spinach or collard greens two to four times a week had half the estimated risk of macular degeneration compared with those who ate them less than once a month," says Johanna Seddon of Harvard Medical School. * Neural Tube Defects: folic acid supplements can reduce the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube birth defects. Folic acid from foods (mostly fruits and vegetables) may also cut the risk. * Diabetes: "We found a lower risk of adult-onset diabetes in people who ate more whole grains," says Willet.

6. Safer food

Some of the deadliest food-borne illnesses enter the body via animal foods. "Ground beef is the most likely source of E. Coli 0157:H7. Poultry carry Salmonella and Campylobacter, and the consumption of raw shellfish has caused infection with Vibrio vulnificus," says David Swerdlow of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Any raw food - including fruits or vegetables - can carry harmful bacteria. "For example, recent outbreaks of Salmonella have been associated with cantaloupe, tomatoes and alfalfa sprouts," says Swerdlow. But meat, seafood and poultry are the most likely culprits in food-borne illness.

7. The environment

"Our eating habits have a tremendous effect on the planet," says Jenkins. "Eating animals wouldn't harm the environment if it were done on a much smaller scale," explains Alan Durning, Director of North-west Environment Watch in Seattle. "Modern meat production involves intensive use - and often misuse - of grain, water, energy and grazing areas," says Durning. He cites the following examples: * Water pollution: the manure and sewage from stockyards, chicken factories, and other feeding facilities can pollute water supplies. * Air pollution: thirty million tons of methane - a gas that contributes to global warning - comes from manure in sewage ponds or heaps. * Soil erosion: nearly 40 per cent of the world's - and more than 70 per cent of US - grain production is fed to livestock. For each pound of meat, poultry, eggs and milk we produce, farm fields lose about five pounds of topsoil. * Water depletion: an estimated half of the grain and hay that's fed to beef cattle is grown on irrigated land. It takes about 390 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef.
* Energy Use: it takes almost ten times more energy to produce and transport livestock than vegetables. * Overgrazing: about 10 per cent of the arid West of the US has been turned into a desert by livestock. But some of that land couldn't be used for much else. "That's why my argument isn't for vegetarianism, but for people to reduce the consumption of animal products," maintains Durning.

8. Cost

Sure, you can spend $7.99 a pound on mesclun or other gourmet foods. But from squash to sweet potatoes, most plants are a downright bargain. And the lower price of plants shows up when you eat out. On Chinese, Indian, and most other restaurant menus, the vegetarian selections are usually cheaper than the meat, seafood and poultry.

9.Animal welfare

It's unpleasant to think about, but before we slaughter them, the animals we eat are often raised and transported under inhumane conditions.

10. Taste

The number-one reason for eating a plant-rich diet is that it tastes good. The five vegetables that Americans eat most are French fries, tomatoes (mostly as sauce or ketchup), onions, iceberg lettuce, and other potatoes. But if most Americans shrink the meat, seafood and poultry on their dinner plates, they - or many of their favourite restaurants - wouldn't know what to replace them with. You have to go to ethnic restaurants to get interesting plant-based dishes. It's no coincidence that ethnic restaurants know how to make vegetable dishes taste good. "Fortunately, there's a wealth of experience around the world because almost all traditional diets are plant-based," says Willet. Yet many Italian, Mexican and other ethnic restaurants have become so Americanised that their vegetables have been largely replaced by meat and cheese. And that's a shame. In Asian and Mediterranean cuisines, cooking fruits and vegetables is an art form. The Italians don't put tremendous amounts of meat and cheese on pizza, for example. I had a thin-crust pizza at a traditional restaurant recently with no cheese - just fresh basil, tomatoes and garlic. It was totally wonderful!

UniCare Sound issue's colorful I.D. Cards

One of the most interesting marketing aspects of the Sound Health Plan form UniCare is the ability to print up an ID card immediately after being accepted. This is a great thing, but the fact that you choose your own color is a pretty neat piece of marketing. Sound is currently the only health plan in the country that has this kind of feature and it is more popular than you think. What it does is make a statement every time you pull it out. It always starts a conversation which is a great way to spread information about the plan by word of mouth. Health insurance has been traditionally a boring, stodgy, serious type of thing, but it doesn't have to be that way. Sound is marketed in lighthearted manner that speaks the same language as the majority of it's target market.
The marketing may be lighthearted, but the plan is rock solid in it's foundation, it has everything a person needs to stay healthy and of course get better if they fall ill, or are injured. The whole idea is to make sure that young people feel comfortable with the plan. Being comfortable breeds trust, and making the Sound Health plan benefit rich, affordable, hip, and cool, is luring young people without health insurance back into the health care system.
The 18-29 age group is the largest group of people without health insurance, bringing them back into the system is what Sound Health plans are all about. www.unicaresoundplans.com

UniCare Sound Plans in Demand

UniCare Sound Plans have proven to be so popular that people in states where the plan is not available have been calling to find out when the plan will expand into their state. We get a lot of call's from Michigan residents who want to have access to the same type of health care benefits residents of Illinois, and Texas are now getting.

For residents of those other states, the wait won't be too much longer, WellPoint plans to keep rolling the plan out under the Sound /Tonik label in a progressive fashion. Colorado, and Nevada were the latest states to gain access to the plan. Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Virginia, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Georgia, Kentucky, New Hampshire, and Ohio should all have the plan available in the near future. Overall the plan should available in most states withing the next couple of years.

"I have been in this business for 18 years" says John Berkowitz of www.unicaresoundplans.com
"I have never seen a health insurance product that has created this type of buzz, and excitement nationally before, it is quite remarkable!"

The great thing about Sound is it gives a person everything they need in health coverage for a very affordable price. There is no reason to go without health insurance anymore because it cost's too much. "I think the biggest reason young single people go unisnured is cost, and access to information, they understand this product, it isn't confusing, there are only three options, and all three are affordable" say's Berkowitz. "If you keep the choices simple, tailor it demographically, put a hip wrapper on it, it makes it easier to market.

Student Health Insurance and UniCare

The UniCare Sound Plan is a perfect fit for students in Illinois, and Texas. The plan is a step up from what you usually get as a student, and in many cases it cost's less too. Once you are your parents insurance this the plan you want to have.

The reasons are pretty simple, Rx, ER, Unlimited Doc visits, Dental, Vison, and low out of pocket with no coinsurance is very attractive to young singles. The plan is specifically designed for the 18-29 age group, but it's a good fit for singles well into their 40's.

When you think it might cost you $40,000 if you blow out your knee if you don't have insurance, the small premium of $60 -$114 per month based on your age and where you live is a nice hedge against disaster.

UniCare Sound in Illinois is affordable health insurance

UniCare's new Sound health program targeted at the young uninsured's in Illinois is a very affordable and comprehensive health insurance plan. The plan fit's in well with what the state of Illinois is trying to do, and that is to make sure that every resident of the state has health insurance. It is a pretty ambitous goal but the state of Illinois legislature is working toward a public/private partnership that would make sure no resident is without health insurance.

Where UniCare Sound fits in is affordability. An Illinois resident can get full quality coverage from $60 to $114 that includes Rx, dental, vision, preventative, ER, and doc visits. "That is a pretty complete package", says John Berkowitz of Medequote. The Chicago based agency which is licensed in Illinois, Texas, and Michigan, all key UniCare states, is poised to start enrolling young people in a lot of new ways. "We of course are trying to get the word out on the internet, and UniCare will start advertising in the media some time this year, but we just might take this product directly to the streets and colleges so we can explain the benefits of having affordable health insurance. Really there is no reason a young person should go without coverage when the price per month is less than it takes to go watch the Cub's for the afternoon with your girlfriend.
We need to get the point across that having health insurance, particularly UniCare Sound, is a smart, and cool thing to do. We want to make health coverage a status symbol."

"Many student's forget that when they graduate they are no longer covered by their parent health plan," say's Berkowitz. "We need to get the word out that there is affordable health coverage availble immediately when you graduate that you can continue till you get a job with full benefits."

UniCare Sound an answer for Texas's 1.2 million uninsured's

The state of Texas has around 1.2 million unisured's between the ages of 18-29. That is a phenomenal number, and enough people to populate a major market city. That major market city would have a pretty poor economy if it existed, and social services would be non existant. Imagine an entire city without insurance coverage? Pretty grim picture isn't it, well that scenario lies hidden among the population of Texas. UniCare Sound Plans were designed to address that need for affordable Texas health insurance.

Since the unisnsured are spread out across the population, and not just in one place the problem is mitigated by the insured's paying into the system to balance things out. the more people that join the health care system the less expensive, and more benefit rich it becomes.

Sound Health plans are targeted at Texas' 1.2 million uninsureds between the ages of 18-29, and offer a truly original approach to health care coverage starting 2-1-2006.

"Sound is a great, affordable, hip, easy to understand and includes preventive, emergency and pharmacy benefits. These young invincibles can choose from the Gravity Bender, Curb Jumper and The Cruisers," says UniCare Premier Agent John Berkowitz.

According to the insurance industry, young adults have the highest rate of being uninsured (about 29 to 39 percent) because they tend to be those who are no longer being covered by parents insurance plans and are just starting new careers that are less likely to have insurance or health plans offered by employers.

Berkowitz has many reasons why he is actively promoting the plan, including the simplicity of the application process. "It only takes a few minutes to apply for a plan, that's it, plus UniCare make's it a fun process as they cater to the sensibilities of the younger demographic. You can even choose the color of your ID card which is pretty cool, yes a simple choice like that makes a difference, and that is why the UniCare Sound Plan is so popular.

The Sound online application and the UniCare Sound Plan system has taken weeks even months off the traditional average underwriting process. Berkowitz comments that not all cases will go as smoothly as the examples mentioned; the process varies for each individual. the average time to complete an application is seven minutes, and if the client is healthy they can be issued, and have a health card in their hand in only a few minutes.

UniCare of Texas is a great company Berkowitz notes, they actually care about consumers and treat them well after the sale, the customer service is excellent with UniCare. the plans are available at www.unicaresoundplans.com

Understanding the UniCare Sound Plan Doc visit benefit

The unlimited Dr office benefit sets Unicare Sound health plans apart from many others. Most low cost health plans cut corners by applying everything to the deductible, or giving you as little as two visits per year. That isn't enough if you get sick, really sick. In fact if you aren't covered for Doc visits it is going to cost a lot of money to get rid of that persistant cough, or to clear up your face.
With the Sound Health plan from UniCare you only pay $40 for a doctor visit as long as you stay in the network, and everything else is at a 100%, that even includes your preventative visits as well so you can stay healthy!
Having your yearly check up is important, especially for you ladies out there who are much more dilligent about it than us guys. You know what it means to blow your two Doc visits on physicals and not have any left for the rest of the year, it sucks. With UniCare you don't have to worry because you are covered from head to toe, With UniCare Sound Health plans you truly are on the road to invincibility.

Another reminder for all of you is to stay in network, make sure you go to the website to look up providers, you don't want to be out of network with any plan because your copays won't work, and that defeats the purpose of the plan. The great thing though about the UniCare Sound Plan is the huge networks which give you so much choice in Texas, and Illinois. You can easily find any type of specialist, or general practicioner you need to help solve your problem.

If you are in the Champaign-Urbana area going to UI you will fond that just about every provider in the area is in the UniCare network. It makes a great choice for a student health plan.
To enroll in the plan just go to www.unicaresoundplans.com

UniCare Sounds off to hot start

UniCare Sound health plans are off to a hot start in Illinois, and Texas. The plans are a big hit with younger adults, especially students and their parents who love the affordable health insurance.
When you're young, shelling out money to buy health insurance probably isn't a big priority, or even though much about. UniCare however feels that young singles will be drawn to the Sound health plan and the program will drastically reduce the number of uninsured young people in Illinois, and Texas. the marketing is the key as it appeals to a younger demographic to put them at ease. John Berkowitz of Medequote comments "It's just like getting a person to go to the dentist, you want to make them as comfortable as possible so they get used to the idea and it becomes habit. Good health care practices are a habit, and a great way to start is with the Sound Health Plan from UniCare available at www.unicaresoundplans.com
UniCare recently unveiled the health plan targeted at young single adults that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Unlimited Doctor Copay, Prescription Card, Emergency Room Copay, 100% coverage after your deductible, $5 million of coverage for about $60 - $114 per month in Illinois, about 20% higher in Texas.
Sound is designed to lure back the younger segment into the system by offering benefit rich plans at a very low price.
If you are in the 20 - 45 age group this is the first plan you need to consider because there is nothing on the market like it for the affordable price.
UniCare has the reputation for giving consumers a break, the Sound health product is just another example of the type of company they are.
